Hubert John Archer
Hubert, born 1910, was the son of Hubert and Emily Archer. He married Annie Ida Leeder, the daughter of George and Eunice Leeder, who lived at Victoria Cottages. Her father worked locally in the tomato nurseries. Hubert and Annie started their married life in 1937 living in Epping and Hubert worked as a builder’s decorator.
Hubert enlisted with the Royal Artillery and became a Gunner. (Regimental Number: 1100031) He died in Italy on 17th December 1944 aged 34 years.
Michael Aelwyn Howell “Aley”
Michael, born 1920, was the son of Martin and Marie Howell and lived with his wife, Deborah, at Bury Farm, Upshire. He had gained a B.Sc in engineering.
Michael enlisted with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (R.E.M.E.) achieving the rank of lieutenant. (Regimental Number: 311781) He died in Italy on 16th March 1945 and is buried in a War Grave at Naples War Cemetery.
Frederick Stephen Clark
Frederick, born 1914, was the son of Horace and Emily Clark. He married Lilian E. Bass in 1934 and lived at Denny Avenue in Waltham Abbey. They had a daughter, Jean Evelyn Clark, who was born in 1934. He worked as a pumping station attendant at the sewage disposal works.
He enlisted with the 42 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA which was formed at Waltham Abbey in November 1939 and became a Gunner. (Regimental Number: 154697) He died on 15th December 1940 and is buried in the Waltham Holy Cross New Cemetery.
Christopher Arthur Noel-Buxton
Christopher, born 1918, was the son of Lord and Lady Noel-Buxton. His brothers and sister included Lord Rufus Alexander Noel-Buxton, Michael Barnet Noel-Buxton and Lydia Victoria Noel-Buxton.
He enlisted with the12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales) achieving the rank of 2nd lieutenant. His unit was the Royal Armoured Corps. (Regimental Number 79378) He died in 1940 following a horse-riding accident at Sudbury in Suffolk. He was 22 years of age.
Percy Robert Clark
Percy, born 1919, was the son of Albert and Laura Louisa Clark and lived with his elder sister Doris Clark in Woodgreen Road, Upshire. His father worked locally as a cowman.
Percy enlisted with The Royal Army Service Corps (R.A.S.C.) (Regimental Number: T/98181) He died on 28th May 1940 at Nord-Pas-De-Calais and is buried in a shared war grave at Dunkirk Town Cemetery. He was 21 years of age.
Leslie John Padfield
Leslie, born 1919, was the son of Austin Bird Padfield and Lucy Anna Maud Padfield and lived at Warlies Park Farm in Upshire together with his brothers, Ernest Austin Padfield and Richard Aubrey Padfield.
Leslie enlisted with the Royal Army Service Corps and was a driver with Other Corps. (Regimental Number: T/123279) He died in 1942 while a prisoner of war in Italy aged 23 years.
Leslie Ernest Fitch
Leslie, born in 1921, was the son of Walter and Bessie Fitch (maiden name Wackett). His father worked as a general labourer for the Council and they lived in Waltham Abbey. Leslie worked in the local glasshouse industry producing food.
Leslie enlisted with the Royal Artillery and became a Gunner. (Regimental Number: 1807016) The Theatre of War is recorded ‘At Sea’. He died on 29th November 1943 aged 22 years.
Charles Warby
Charles, born in 1923, was the foster-son of Mrs M.M.Nielson who lived in Upshire and was the husband of Joan Warby.
Charles enlisted with the 2nd The Fife and Forfar Yeomanry Royal Armoured Corps. and became a Trooper. (Regimental Number: 7957836) He died on 28th June 1944 and is buried in a war grave at the Bayeux War Cemetery in France. He was 21 years of age.
Harry Louis Wood
Harry, born in 1920, was the son of Frederick and Rose Elizabeth Wood who lived and worked at the Good Intent and later the cottage next door in Copthall Green, Upshire. Harry was one of nine children – James, Peggy, Harry, Betty, Frederick, Jean, Peter, Doreen and Bill. Harry worked at the Potteries in Woodgreen Road. They later lived at Tennyson Avenue in Waltham Abbey.
Harry enlisted with the Royal Artillery and he died, aged 22 years, at Monte Cassino in Italy in 1942. His name is commemorated on a plaque along with others who died at Monte Cassino. Harry’s father was the brother of “Eddy Wood” who is named on the WW1 Memorial also shown in the lychgate.
